  • A few people who have trouble drinking cold or hot drinks or eating ice cream can sometimes experience some mild sensitivity response to their Teeth Whitening procedure.
These cases are very rare, but can be uncomfortable for susceptible individuals and can last several days.

  • Scaling & Polishing your teeth prior to teeth whitening can increase the risk if hypersensitivity.

  • Tooth sensitivity following the use of whitening products subsides within 12-24 hours. Such clients report relief from Ibuprofen (Nurofen) Tablets.Where there is hypersensitivity a Pain Relief Gel such as ‘Orajel’ can provide immediate relief.

  • Sensitivity is generally not painful; clients with sensitive teeth say “it was more just a mild discomfort lasting just a few hours, but well worth it for their whiter teeth”.
Nevertheless, because we want to ensure your greatest comfort in our clinics as you relax and listen to soft music during the procedure, we take every precaution to help relieve any sensitivity

  • Using a Desensitising Tooth Paste
Desensitising Tooth Pastes such as Sensodyne® or sinilar can help make your teeth whitening more comfortable.

  • Clients using Sensodyne are usually sensitivity-free during and after their procedure, which is typically when clients with sensitive teeth can experience a degree of whitening-related sensitivity. Further, our clients using Sensodyne were significantly more satisfied with their whitening experience.  Hence, we recommend that whitening patients brush with Sensodyne® or similar, two times a day prior to the whitening procedure.
Our whitening gel is the only gel available in NZ to be approved without restriction in the by NZ Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in the 2011 review of Dental Teeth Whitening Products.

Scientific research has shown that the active ingredients in the BEYOND® OSMO™ Teeth Whitening Gel are very effective and extremely safe for cosmetic tooth whitening.
In a recent clinical study our whitening gel was scientifically proven to be Safer than Orange Juice.

The dental community has used these ingredients in performing teeth whitening for more than 130-years.

Teeth Whitening gel was first used to whiten teeth in 1884 and although more than 130 years have passed, there has never been a recorded case of any hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening gel damaging the enamel of a healthy tooth.

Because the sole purpose of Cosmetic Teeth Whitening is for beautification it is globally considered to be a Cosmetic procedure rather than a health or dental treatment, cosmetic teeth whitening is provided by both Dentists and Specialist Aestheticians.

The Legal definition of a cosmetic product is;
“any substance or preparation intended for placing in contact with the various external part of the human body or with the teeth and mucous membranes of the oral cavity with a view exclusively or principally to cleaning them, perfuming them or protecting them in order to keep them in good condition, change their appearance or correct body odours” (The EU Cosmetics Directive (implemented in the UK by the UK Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations.

When it comes to teeth whitening, your teeth have two basic elements.

The two basic elements.
  1. The Dentin is the actual ‘tooth-bone’ that gives your teeth their natural white-ivory colour
  2. The Enamel is a clear, ‘glass-like’ protein layer’ that ‘clothes’ the tooth Dentin.
Enamel can be likened to a glass window that we look through to see the natural white-ivory colour of our tooth Dentin below the enamel.

Whenever the Enamel ‘window’ is stained, it veils the natural white-ivory colour of your teeth, and your teeth appear yellow or darker than they naturally would. No amount of surface brushing can remove such staining.

Cosmetic Teeth Whitening safely cleans the enamel ‘window’ by whitening the stains locked deeply within, instantly revealing the natural whiteness of your teeth.

Whitening occurs as oxygen molecules from the teeth whitening gel spreads throughout the tooth enamel bleaching the discolored molecules in your teeth. This results in a ‘glass-clear’ Enamel ‘window’ revealing the natural whiteness of your Dentin below.
“It’s a bit like window cleaning”

The Teeth Whitening treatment provides dramatic results for anyone who wants to whiten their teeth. This includes people with teeth that have been stained by smoking or by substances such as coffee or tea. It also whitens teeth antibotically stained by tetracycline, speckled by fluoride, or hereditary discolouration.

Pregnant or Breast Feeding or under 16yrs:
All Teeth Whitening is ‘Contraindicated’ for Women Pregnant & Breast feeding and children under 16 years.
That means, although these reasons have not been scientifically proven, these factors are considered to serve as a reason to withhold a certain treatment during this time. Therefore, until scientific research studies these factors and says yes or no, certain products are ‘Contraindicated’ as an unproven safety risk.

Because all teeth whiten differently it is not possible to guarantee how white an individuals teeth might become.

Nevertheless, for most, after undergoing whitening with our In-Clinic Teeth Whitening System, teeth shades whiten between 2 to 10 shades depending upon how stained your teeth are. Of course, if your teeth start at say a 5, the very maximum you can whiten is 5 shades.

Although individual results vary, the end result will be a whiter, shiny smile. Some clients with badly stained teeth or Tetracycline (antibiotic) staining may require several procedures.

This varies from person to person and depends on diet and lifestyle; for a few fortunate individuals with atypical diets the effects can last up to 1-2 years. However, for most, their teeth whitening lasts 3 – 9 months.

Periodic touch-up treatments are recommended 3-monthly for clients who frequently consume coffee or other staining foods and drinks or for those that use tobacco products.

Scaling & Polishing can cause gums to recede from the base of the teeth, and therefore can expose Patients to the risk of exposing the dentin root of a tooth. If teeth is whitened in this condition there is an unacceptable risk of acute hypersensitivity due to the whitening gel sliding down into 'a Pocket' between the tooth base and a detached gum therefore, it is recommended for patients to wait 14 days for gums to come back before your whitening procedure.

For 24 hrs after the treatment:

  • Do NOT eat or drink dark, staining substances such as: coffee, tea, red wine, soy sauce and cola.
  • Do NOT eat staining food such as: beetroot, carrots, blueberries, and the like; try to stick to 'white' diet such as Fish, Chicken, Cauliflower.
  • Do NOT smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco-containing products.
  • Do NOT use coloured toothpaste.
